A Moral Story
Posted by D.K.Suriya Narayanan under Favorites, Inpirational, Sourced, Stories[4] Comments
The air was muggy and fetid in the Long Beach Sports Arena on that summer day in 1964. The air conditioning was malfunctioning and the crowd at the international Karate Tournament was getting restless after watching hours of matches. Then Ed Parker, sponsor of the annual event, took the microphone and introduced Bruce Lee, who was to put on a demonstration of jeet-kune-do. There was an instant hush and all heads craned forward. Before his movie career began Bruce Lee was already a legend among martial arts.
Bruce walked onto the elevated boxing ring wearing a simple, black, tailor-made kung-fu uniform. He spoke quietly for a few moments about his art and then began the demonstration. It is always impressive to watch a large muscular man perform karate, overwhelming the observer with a display of sheer; vibrant power. But to me, it is even more impressive to see a slightly built man executing techniques with blinding speed, his motions as quick and elegant as those of a bird in flight.
Some weeks later a friend arranged for me to meet Bruce, from whom I hoped to take private lessons. Bruce was highly selective about the students he chose to teach, and this meeting was to be kind of audition for me.
Since he gave only private lessons and had no formal studio, the meeting was at my home. He arrived promptly and I went out into the front yard to meet him. At first glance he appeared even smaller than he looked on stage. He was wearing snug fitting, full-length athletic pants and a green tank top shirt that revealed rippling muscles. He was smiling when we shook hands, but he quickly got to the point.
‘Why do you want to study with me?’, He asked.
“Because I was impressed with your demonstration and because I’ve heard you are the best.”
“You have studied other martial arts ?” he asked.
“For a long time,” I answered, “but I stopped some time ago and now I want to start over again”
Bruce nodded and asked me to demonstrate some of the techniques I already knew. We went out to my drive way and he watched intently as I went through the various katas, or exercises, from other disciplines. Then he asked me to execute some basic kicks, blocks, and punches on a bag hanging from a rafter of the garage.
“Do you realize you will have to unlearn all you have learned and start over again?”, he asked.
”No”, I said.
Bruce smiled and placed his hand lightly on my shoulders. “Let me tell you a story my Sifu taught me,”, he said.
“It is about the Japanese Zen master who received a university professor who came to inquire about Zen.
“It was obvious to the master from the start of the conversation that the professor was not so much interested in learning about Zen as he was in impressing the master with his opinions and knowledge. The master listened patiently and finally suggested they have Tea. The master poured his visitor’s cup full and then kept on pouring.
“The professor watched the cup overflowing until he could no longer restrain himself.
‘The cup is overfull, no more will go in’
“ ‘Like this cup’, the master said, ‘You are full of your own opinions and speculations. How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup?’ “
Bruce studied my face. “You understand the point?”
“Yes” I said. “You want me to empty my mind of past knowledge and old habits so that I will be open to new learning.”
“Precisely,” said Bruce. “And now we are ready to begin your first lesson.”
This does not mean that Bruce prevented me from applying a critical mind to his teaching. In fact, he welcomed discussion, even argument. But when challenged too long on a point his reply was always, “At least empty your cup and try.”
It has been more than a decade since my first lesson with Bruce, and I am now in my mid-fifties. With half a century of life experience behind me, I sometimes get impatient with a new idea or technique. But when I feel impatient or act dogmatically self-assured, I remind my-self of the lesson Bruce taught me, and I try to empty my cup to make room for new methods and ideas.

While reading through the recent edition of Sir.APJ`s ‘billion beats’ issue dated 27th feb, The ‘Knowledge equation’ what he had highlighted over in it made me remember some other related quotes and sayings too.
These formulae may be very simple as equations but are quite difficult to follow/implement in real life. Also be it in whatever situation and state of mind we are, we can always get a ‘quote/saying’ for it which makes us feel it is right or which guides us to proceed further. This sometimes gives rise to quite contradictory sayings too.
Some sample famous quotes as equations/formulas:
1) The formula for Success is 1% knowledge 99% hardwork
2) The formula for Success is just two steps
a) Don’t tell what you know to others
b)
3) If A is success in life, then A =x + y + z. Work is x; y is play; and z is keeping your mouth shut.(Albert Einstein).
4) Willpower = Desire + Reward – Punishment
5) Happiness = Acceptance + Inspiration + Respect (called as AIR equation)
6) Positive emotions = Something + “acceptance”
7) Negative emotions = Something + “non-acceptance”
There are so many quotes like this that I had come across.
From all these I can infer that all these quotes and sayings are only the reflections of the state of mind from the quote authors. And we getting remembered of such quotes or using these equations to guide us are also purely due to the reflection according to our state of mind. These reflections though guides us, it might give a +ve outcome or a–ve outcome. So in my opinion we need to include our own sense and arrive at the right equation to be followed or use an equation arrived of our own and not just blindly follow any one of them.

I got an opportunity to notice this picture today and still laughing about the message. Look at those expressions on all faces.
Very True! Especially for persons like me this one makes a very good sense.
On many occasions some of my well-wishers have asked me why I am showing utter disinterest to make smart investments through shares , mutual funds etc when I have a real and adequate ability to crack it easily so as to gain multitude of returns back. They used to fire at me asking what am I doing with all my money that I am earning. I reply that I spend them for my use. Rest I give my parents. And of course I am sensible enough and make a (reasonable) savings and investments for a better future.
Next question from them will be “What investments?” On Such questions though when I won’t have an immediate answer, I tell them…’mm…LIC, NSS etc’. Then immediately I get a reply of 1000s of advices “Why not this? Why not that? That will give a 10 times return. This will give 100 times return”… But I only end up giving an answer “Podaaaaang…Dae…Don’t pester me da machi…I will take care”. Pch!! Enuf! The reason being I don’t ‘desperately’ need money returns.
Of course Money investments are wise plans to make our future better. But don’t know why I am not developing an interest to plan out strategies to make Money investments as a ‘race’ – like ‘Who wins by getting huge returns in X number of years?’ If it is a race, then sorry! I am not into that game. For me there are only two kinds of people in terms of this. First – those who achieve what they want. And the second – those who enjoy/ utilize what they got / get. I wish to enjoy/ utilize with what I got / getting. But I see most people not doing the second part. Because they are in the ‘race’. For me wise are those who do the second part also. Just breaking our head on achieving what we need is not a complete one.
If the meaning conveyed above is vague – Consider this example. You want to ‘desperately’ buy a TV for some reason. But thinking like waiting till Diwali will give us a 50 % discount + gift – is not a right decision for me. One can relate it with a famous quote “The best time to buy something is when you are in need of it”. By the time you look for an ‘optimized & efficient’ time to buy something your DESIRE on buying the thing would have gone stale. It’s all there whether you want to ‘buy’ a TV or ‘desperately buy’ a TV.
To make it simple I DO think of making investments. But not in terms of ‘desperate’ money. They are of different type. It might give huge returns back in future or it might not give. That I know very well and ready to face the consequences. Because After all, it’s my decision
